This is a Japanese chisel made by master blacksmith Kakusaburo Ouchi, the second generation Ouchi, using traditional forging techniques with laminated steel construction. The high carbon steel provides an extremely sharp edge while the soft backing steel provides toughness and durability. Condition: New old stock. The chisels have never been sharpened or used and are in excellent condition, there are some light marks, stains, patina, etc from storage. As this is an unused item, you will need to set up and sharpen the chisels. These are as close to brand new as you will find for the age (likely 50+ years old). The style is Hiramachi or mortise side wall chisel. This type of chisel is designed for cleaning up the inside walls of mortises. The neck is thin and flat, which makes it easier to chop deeper into mortises than standard Japanese chisels. These are larger than standard hiramachis, roughly chu-tataki size. Length: 255mm 10? Blacksmith: Ouchi – the second generation, Kakusaburo Ouchi. Hard Steel: Hitachi white paper steel. Style: Hiramachi mortise side wall chisel. Handle Wood: Shiragashi (Japanese White Oak).

Nezumi is Fujikawa’s high end line of chisels. This is made with a special, high-performance powdered metal high-speed steel. High-speed steel provides a sharp edge that is very difficult to dull or chip, making it a great choice for hard, abrasive, or dirty woods, as well as other materials like MDF, various plastics, etc. The handle on this one is angled more than normal so you don’t hit it when chopping deep mortises, I think it’s a special order item. Condition: The chisel is in good used condition. The back has been flattened and it has been sharpened to 8000 grit on Shapton Glass stones. The hoop has been set and the handle mushroomed. Save yourself the considerable setup time with this used and ready to use chisel. The style is Oire Nomi, otherwise known as a standard bench chisel. This style of chisel is meant for general-purpose use and is suitable for carpentry and cabinetry work. With a metal hoop to prevent splitting of the wood handle, it is meant to be hit with a genno or metal hammer. Width: 30mm 1 1/8. Length: 215mm 8 1/2. ?? – Nezumi from Fujikawa. Style: Oire Nomi (bench chisel). Handle Wood: Gumi wood. Hoop Style: Hammer finish.
